Matariki 2026 at Te Rimutahi
Client: Ponsonby Business Association
Info
For Matariki 26, Creature Post helped transform Te Rimutahi into an immersive public experience combining community, sound, light and real-time interactive projection.
The activation opened with a karakia from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, followed by a looping immersive seven-minute soundscape created by Dan Waipoua, Huia Hamon and Creature Post, in collaboration with Dr Rangi Mātāmua.
Originally developed for Stardome Observatory and Planetarium, the work combines contemporary composition, taonga pūoro, waiata and layered sound design to move through the traditional phases of Matariki: naming the stars, gathering together, celebration, reflection and remembering those no longer with us.
An interactive real time projection invited visitors to step into the work, transforming their movement into stardust across the night sky, projected onto a facade.
Together, the three connected zones created a welcoming public experience centred on participation, storytelling and connection.
Proudly presented by the Ponsonby Business Association.
